The Society for Educational Studies invites bids from researchers interested in making an original contribution to knowledge in the field of educational studies. The theme for this year is Engaging Young People in Civic Action and Learning.

The 2007 Major Grant

The Society for Educational Studies is delighted to announce that the 2007 Major Grant has been awarded to Prof Gary Thomas, Dr Oliver Mason and Natasha Macnab at the School of Education, University of Birmingham. The title of their bid is:

Engagement with reported research in different areas of publication peer review: consequences for teaching and learning in Higher Education.

The Society would like to thank everyone for their applications and their interest this year.


Society for Educational Studies: Book Prizes 2007

SES awards annual prizes for outstanding books on education published in the previous year.

We congratulate the winners of prizes for books published in 2006.

• 1st prize (£2000): Carolyn Jackson: Lads and Ladettes: gender and the fear of failure. Open University Press.

• 2nd prize: John White (£1000): Intelligence, Destiny and Education: the ideological roots of intelligence testing. Routledge.

• Highly recommended (£750): Charlie Lewis and Jeremy Carpendale: How Children Develop Social Understanding, Blackwell.


Society for Educational Studies: Research Awards 2007

The Society for Educational Studies contributes to high quality research by funding competitive bids in the field of education. The Society would like to invite bids for two Major Awards. Each of these awards is for £30,000. The deadline for submission of applications for both Awards is 30th May 2007. The results will be announced on this website on 30th June 2007.

Bids are invited from prospective researchers who are interested in making an innovative contribution in the area of education.
In recognition of Prof Gill Nicholls contribution to the work of this learned Society, the first award, the Gill Nicholls Award, will be given to research in the area of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
The second Major Award will be given to bids investigating a topical educational concern in the field of Educational Studies. This Award is for research which seeks to make a contribution to educational practice in any phase of education. It is envisioned that the published work based on the research funded through both awards will make significant contributions to the field.

Small Grant Scheme

Grants applications may be submitted, for awards up to £5000 either for small scale research projects or pilot studies. The aim of the grants is to encourage and stimulate research in education and priority will be given to those starting their research careers.
