Information for Applicants
The following information is meant to provide sufficient details for all applicants. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to give further detailed personal guidance to each individual applicant in addition to what is stated clearly below. In the interest of equity and transparency, all further enquiries for further assistance will be referred back to these notes below.
Applications should be sent by e-mail to Prof. Jon Davison at jon.davison@canterbury.ac.uk.
For both Major Awards
- There should be one named person who will maintain the correspondence
- The bid should clearly indicate which one of the two Awards interest the researchers
- It should be an original piece of work
- The rationale for the study should be stated in a clear and concise manner
- A brief CV - maximum length 2 page - should be enclosed for each researcher involved in the project
- Theoretical frameworks should be made explicit
- Attention should be given to methodological aspects, including any relevant ethical dimensions which are entailed in the study
- If it is an empirical study, procedures to be used for Data collection and Analysis should be easily identifiable
- The bid should indicate what the likely intended outcomes might be
- Attention should be given to dissemination of research findings
- A projected Timescale should be included
- The names of all researchers who will be involved should be stated
- Likely budget which the research will incur- this must not exceed £30,000 total expenditure from the Society.
- The names of three referees should be included, per application, though the Society might also refer to others referees who know the field well.
The main criteria used for short-listing and awarding the grant are as follows:
- It should be an original piece of work
- That the idea presented should not have received prior funding from another source eg ESRC, Leverhulme.
- Originality does not imply continuing with a project for which previous funds have run out, or which is another variation on the same theme
- Requests for funding ‘writing up data' will not be considered
- Requests for extensive travel abroad to collect data is not considered.
